You do not need to be flexible, athletic or familiar with stretch terminology before trying StretchworX. A first assisted-stretching session should begin with a conversation, continue at a range you can comfortably communicate through and leave you in control of every movement.

For Merritt Island residents—and neighbors coming from Cocoa, Cocoa Beach, Cape Canaveral or Rockledge—the practical questions are usually simple: What should I wear? Do I stay clothed? Will it hurt? What does the practitioner actually do? This guide answers those questions without hype.

Quick answer: what happens during a StretchworX session?

During a StretchworX assisted-stretching session, you remain fully clothed on a professional stretch table. The practitioner asks about your goals and relevant health history, positions and supports your body, then guides you through controlled stretches while checking how each movement feels. You can request less range, change position or stop at any time.

Assisted stretching is a wellness service, not medical diagnosis, physical therapy or injury rehabilitation. If you have a recent injury, surgery, severe or unexplained pain, a joint condition or another health concern, ask your physician or physical therapist whether stretching is appropriate before booking.

1. Arrive in comfortable movement clothing

Wear clothing that allows your hips, shoulders and knees to move without restriction. Athletic pants, leggings, shorts and a comfortable shirt are practical choices. Avoid stiff denim, tight belts, restrictive skirts or clothing that makes movement uncomfortable.

You stay clothed throughout the session. Clean socks are a good idea because assisted stretches may involve your feet and legs.

2. Expect a conversation before the stretching begins

Your practitioner needs to understand what brought you in. That might be general stiffness after desk work, time spent driving around Brevard County, standing through long workdays, exercise or simply wanting to move more comfortably.

Be ready to discuss:

  • Areas that feel tight or limited
  • Recent injuries, surgeries or medical procedures
  • Joint replacements, osteoporosis or balance concerns
  • Activities you regularly perform
  • Any movement that causes pain, numbness, tingling or dizziness
  • Your comfort level and goals for the visit

This is not a diagnosis. It is a safety and comfort conversation that helps the practitioner determine whether to proceed, modify a position or recommend that you seek medical guidance first.

3. The practitioner guides the movement, but you remain in control

On the table, the practitioner may support a leg, hip, shoulder or arm while guiding it through a controlled range. Some positions may feel familiar from stretching at home; others may be easier with support because you are not trying to hold the limb and stretch at the same time.

Your job is not to force the movement. Breathe normally and communicate. Say something immediately if you feel sharp pain, pinching, numbness, tingling, dizziness or anything that feels wrong.

Mayo Clinic’s stretching guidance recommends smooth movement without bouncing and says stretching should create tension rather than pain. If it hurts, the range has gone too far and should be reduced.

4. Expect check-ins about pressure and range

A productive assisted stretch is not a contest to see how far your body can be pushed. Genetics, previous activity, old injuries and normal differences between sides can all affect flexibility. The session should be adjusted to you rather than compared with another client.

Consent continues throughout the appointment. “Less,” “pause,” “change position” and “stop” are always acceptable. You can also decline a particular stretch without needing to justify the decision.

5. You may focus on a few useful areas—not every muscle

A first visit may emphasize the areas connected to your stated goal, such as hips after long periods of sitting, shoulders after computer work or lower-body mobility for recreational activity. A focused session is often more useful than rushing through a long list of movements.

Stretching can support flexibility and joint range of motion, but it does not guarantee pain relief, prevent every injury or replace strength, aerobic activity or medical care. The U.S. Physical Activity Guidelines emphasize regular physical activity as part of overall health; stretching is one part of a broader movement routine.

What should assisted stretching feel like?

A stretch may feel noticeable, but it should remain controlled and manageable while you breathe and talk normally. Sharp pain is not a sign that the technique is “working.” Tell the practitioner if you feel pain or unusual sensations, and do not try to push through them.

You might notice that one side moves differently from the other. That observation can guide the session, but it is not a medical diagnosis.

What happens after the session?

Take your time sitting up and standing. Notice how you feel rather than assuming you need a complicated recovery routine. Your practitioner can explain any simple, service-appropriate suggestions, but individualized exercise rehabilitation should come from a qualified healthcare professional.

How often to schedule depends on your goal, schedule, response and broader activity routine. No fixed number of sessions can guarantee a particular outcome.
